What it is
Alexa+ is Amazon's conversational AI assistant that runs on Echo speakers, Fire TV devices, and mobile apps. The proprietary model handles multi-turn dialogue with context retention — you can ask a follow-up question without repeating the subject. Prime members already using Echo hardware get it free; non-Prime users pay $14.99/mo. The audience that recurs in available feedback is existing Echo owners who want better natural language understanding for general knowledge queries and smart home control.
At a glance
Alexa+ integrates deeply with Amazon's ecosystem — Echo devices, Fire TV, smart home routines — which gives it a workflow automation advantage over standalone chatbots. However, the conversational AI itself is a foundation model wrapper without proprietary data or specialized fine-tuning. Users report the AI upgrade made basic tasks (timers, smart home control) less reliable than the legacy Alexa, undermining the UX innovation claim.

“I love A+ so much. I've been waiting forever for this, and im thrilled. Now that she has NL, she can do what I want her to do, vs my guessing how to ask her things I need to know if she can do, without redoing it for a fg pause, or for not saying the request perfectly, etc etc etc. Im so freakin pleased. And she's going to improve a lot over the next year, I don't need her perfect, but before this, it was just embarrassing how awful it was.”
“We tried Alexa+ and it gave WRONG answers. When challenged it would say something like "sorry, my bad". If you can't trust what it says, why have it? Back to regular Alexa. ( got rid of Prime too)”
“For me is how dumb it is compared to my ChatGPT pro account. With my ChatGPT account, I can talk to it carry on a conversation like a real person. It’s intuitive. It’s forward thinking. I don’t get hung up on any of my requests or responses that have nothing to do with what I asked for there. I can only imagine that the AI that Amazon is using for Alexa+ is bare-bones and cheap. There’s no excuse when a platform has figured out how to make their AI experience as close to human as possible for a ”
“It's been so bad lately too! I asked it about the Bears Vikings game and it mentioned the Bears won(Vikings won)Then I asked what time the Seahawks played and it said 1pm central (it's noon). It's just confidently incorrect.”
“Yes, I got this offer on Echo Show, but when I tried to activate it, it was charging full price. I contacted Amazon customer service on the chat and sent them a photo of the offer. They told me to sign up for Prime at the full monthly price then offered me a full refund! They also said I can reach out next month to get a refund for the second month. I’m pleased because I like to take Prime for Prime Day and Black Friday.”
“"Alexa, exit Alexa plus" ... because it either no longer exists in their app or they've managed to bury it so well that I can't find it. Also because it's now "free for prime members" you can't go in to your subscriptions and cancel it as it's no longer a separate item. Now I guess we wait for +$20 prime membership price increase. - "Hey lets sell Alexa+ for $20 a month" - "Hey why is nobody buying Alexa+ for $20 a month? Ok we'll force everyone into a "free trial" that then will convert to $20 ”
“Anyone else receive an email saying their 30 day free trial of alexa+ has begun? Without asking for/signing up for it? I just did... cancelled and have verification emails, but still odd...I was even in a room without the device🤷🤷”
“Just got the email this afternoon. I rushed into the other other room to tell it to "end Alexa plus." Why would they force a free trial on customers? They must have found out it's not selling itself like they though it would.”
“Ficou muito boa agora, além de atender a vários comandos simultâneos, a execução para comando de dispositivos ficou muito rápida. TOP!”
“I tried Plus for a year and converted back to Legacy because Plus did such a horrible job of running my routines . I've been using Alexa since 2015 but any attempt to force me back to Plus will be the end of Alexa for me. If I won't take it when its free they sure as hell won't be able to sell it to me. Currently there is no shortage of free LLMs so unless Amazon can figure out how to make theirs run my routines as well as Legacy they don't have a marketable product.”
“It made us throw out our Alexas. They became less usable for every day tasks. But also it would activate without the wake word - even when we yelled at it to stop listening. I’ve had an Alexa since they first came out, and it chiming in on the debate we were having between two words unprompted was the last straw.”
“I’ve been using echo devices to control smart devices for YEARS. I have added fire tvs, thermostats, smart plugs and switches; I basically love easy automation with voice control. I use groups and routines to get even more special results. I am deeply invested in this ecosystem. Alexa+ has completely ruined that for me. She literally will not do things I tell her to, plainly and directly. My thermostats can’t be controlled by voice or app any more (“server is unresponsive”). My fire cube doesn’t”
“Once they added the personality styles , I was happy. The standard personality was just way too chatty. The brief personality still allows for detailed, complex conversation when needed, but keeps things short and sweet when asking something simple.”
“AI Broke Alexa & Echo DOTS: Nothing in the app matches the AI help descriptions and it is impossible to find anything. Ridiculous that Audible, which is owned by Amazon, no longer works and cannot be found vial a search because the AI returns results for every Alexa prompt that is “audible”/ can be heard- so- thousands or phrases starting with “Alexa…””
“Incredibly hard to use: All I wanna do is connect my echo clock thing and I cannot get it connected to my phone no matter what I do”
“Unable to access the menu since the last update. Before the last update, many times when I opened the app it would be blank, not show the home screen, but the three lines for menu would show so I could get to where I needed to go. Now, after this last update, everything is gone, its blank except for a search bubble. I literally cannot access any menu. Its hit and miss if it will show home when I open the app, and if it doesnt then I cannot access any of the menu items. Extremely frustrating.”

Questions
Alexa+ is Amazon's upgraded conversational AI assistant that enables natural dialogue with context retention across Echo devices, Fire TV, Fire tablets, and mobile apps. Unlike the original Alexa that requires specific command structures, Alexa+ allows users to interrupt, change topics mid-conversation, and make multiple requests at once while maintaining conversational context across devices.
Alexa+ offers three pricing tiers: a Free plan with limited daily usage on Alexa.com, the app, and compatible Fire TV devices; a Prime plan at $14.99/month for unlimited access bundled with all Prime benefits; and a Standard plan at $19.99/month for unlimited access without Prime membership but including 1TB storage. Both paid plans include a 30-day free trial.
Alexa+ maintains conversational context across requests and devices, while the original Alexa treats each command as isolated and requires precise phrases. Alexa+ allows natural dialogue where you can interrupt, change topics, and make multiple requests at once, whereas original Alexa requires specific command structures. The original Alexa continues to be available on Echo devices for free users.
Most Echo models support Alexa+ except first and second generation Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Plus, Echo Show, Echo Spot, Amazon Tap, and first generation Echo Buds. For Fire TV, you need Fire TV Cube 3rd Gen, Fire TV Stick 4K models, or Fire TV Omni series, and Fire tablets must run Fire OS 8 or higher.
Yes, Alexa+ features cross-device conversation continuity that allows you to start a conversation on one device and continue it on another without losing context. This works across Echo speakers, Fire TV, Fire tablets, the mobile Alexa app, and Alexa.com, maintaining the full conversation history as you move between devices.
Alexa+ goes beyond simple voice commands by offering voice-created routines where you can say "wake me up with lights and coffee at 7 AM" without manual programming, proactive alerts about unexpected changes like unlocked doors, and customized smart home highlights showing security camera footage and pet activity. It also provides personalized automation suggestions based on learned patterns from your usage.
The Prime plan at $14.99/month includes unlimited Alexa+ access plus all Prime benefits like fast shipping, Prime Video, Amazon Music, unlimited photo storage, and 5GB video storage. The Standard plan at $19.99/month provides unlimited Alexa+ access and 1TB photo and video storage, but does not include Prime membership benefits like shipping or streaming services.
Yes, Alexa+ integrates with Ring for home monitoring, allowing you to view security camera footage directly on Fire TV or Echo Show devices. The assistant also provides proactive alerts about unexpected changes in your home, such as unlocked doors, as part of its smart home monitoring capabilities.
Alexa+ is currently available in English and Spanish for U.S. customers only. The service works across all compatible devices including Echo speakers, Fire TV, Fire tablets, Samsung TVs with Alexa Built-in, and select Bose and JBL speakers in these languages.
